Marion is a city in McDowell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 4,943 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of McDowell CountyGR6.

There were 2,351 housing units at an average density of 267.0/km (690.7/mi). The racial makeup of the city was 83.23% White, 10.54% African American, 0.28% Native American, 1.05% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.82% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.04% of the population.

There were 2,146 households out of which 24.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.1% were married couples living together, 14.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.2% were non-families. 37.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
